Heddi!! Baby's named a bad, bad thing
This entry is for Heather, because I thought of you when I was reading my local paper yesterday. Many times I have enjoyed your link to Baby's Named a Bad, Bad Thing. The writer's comments are particulary funny. Anyway, in my local paper yesterday was a picture of two girls cartwheeling in the park, or something, and their names were in the caption. The younger girl, aged 5, was named ... wait for it ... Qwynci. No, I'm not kidding. I assume it's pronounced Quincy, but...Qwynci. I was stunned, and thought of you immediately. Some people have too much time on their hands
You know that book, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff? I am so sick of everyone whining about illegal immigration. It's just small stuff. Has anyone noticed that gas is $3 a gallon? Let's whine about that instead. Seriously, I was taking the kiddos to school this morning and I saw someone with these handmade signs all over their back windshield that said things like "Stop Illegal Immigration Now!" and "No Amnesty!" Geez, hate much? Racist much? And don't forget the Support our Troops magnet and the church sticker. I would bet a lot of money that the owners of that car consider themselves "Christians". I swear, "Christians" are responsible for more hate, intolerance, and racism than I can believe. And I put "Christians" in quotes, because to me, these people are not actual Christians. Christian = following the teachings of Jesus. You know, love thy neighbor, help the poor, blessed are the peacemakers, practice tolerance, and all that pesky stuff. I happen to live in an area (Chandler, suburb of Phoenix) where there are a lot of immigrants from Mexico. Yes, a lot of them are illegal. Every morning in a downtown section of my city, there are many Hispanic men standing around on the corners, waiting to be picked up by someone who will give them work for the day. Personally, I think if people have a problem with this (and I don't, other than the fact that these people are being taken advantage of by working in the heat like dogs for very little pay) then they should blame the people that hire them. Blame the rich white guy in his pickup truck who doesn't want to mow his own yard, or trim his own trees. He and others like him have created this market. Where I live, I interact with people who speak Spanish all the time. So what? Often, I will speak Spanish back to them. It's not perfect Spanish, but it's communicating in another language, and they always appreciate my not-so-grammatically-correct efforts. There are plenty of Hispanics here who speak both Spanish and English. I think if someone is fluent in two languages, they are probably smarter than me. They are most definitely smarter than all of these people who are running around OMGWTFSPANISH!!!one!!! I just don't get what all the hype is about. Live and let live, and mind your own business, I say. And then there are people who have their panties all in a twist about people singing the National Anthem in Spanish. Holy cow, who cares?? It's the National Anthem in any language! The spirit of the song matters, the language does not. Ask yourself this, if you're Catholic, do prayers only count in Latin? Of course not. Becuase it's the ideas that matter, not the words or the language. So get over it. I know I probably don't express myself that well, but I am just so fed up with people who are all wound up about something that to me, is a non-issue. If you want to bitch about something, how about...gas prices, The Bush Crime Family, Iraq, Iran (You know, the next country we're going to illegally occupy), terrorists, the madness of Karl Rove, etc. Oh, and one more thing...to call anyone who is an illegal immigrant a "terrorist" has got to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. By definition, a terrorist is someone who terrorizes, who wants people to live in fear. I'm not afraid of people with brown skin who speak Spanish. Why should I be? | | Thursday, April 20th, 2006 | | 10:04 am |

Kylie's trip to the ER
Thursday night, I was at work. Steve called around 9:30pm to tell me that he was taking Kylie to the ER and she needed stitches in her forehead. Apparently she had been jumping on her older sister's bed, and went headfirst into the nightstand/bookcase. I left work immediately and met them at the hospital. I was pretty impressed with the service we received. We only spent about 20 minutes in the waiting room, and the whole episode took just over two hours. When I saw all the people in the waiting room, I really thought we would be there most of the night. Thankfully, we weren't. Also thankfully, stitches were not required. They used Dermabond instead. Apparently now they can just glue you back together when you break. :) I was very happy, as I was not looking forward to watching as they took needle and thread to my baby's forehead. She didn't even cry when they irrigated the wound, then closed it up with the Dermabond. Yay, ER staff! This is a picture with the cut closed up, it doesn't look bad at all. It looked much worse before they glued her back together. I would say that it gaped open at least a quarter inch at the widest point, and it was kind of deep. Squick. | | 9:24 am |

Ideas, anyone?
So tomorrow, middle daughter is turning 11 years old. She is having a sleepover ( I know, God help me), and I came up the idea of playing Win, Lose or Draw (or Pictionary) on the whiteboard easel. Remember the TV show with Bert Convey, or am I the only one that old? lol Anyway, I am trying to come up with sayings I can write on little slips of paper that they can pick out of a hat to draw. They can be sayings, movie titles, bands, songs, whatever...they just have to be something that 10-11 year old girls will be familiar with. Here's what I have so far: Somewhere over the rainbow On pins and needles The early bird gets the worm Don’t cry over spilled milk Twinkle twinkle little star Skeleton in the closet Green Day The Backstreet Boys Cheaper by the Dozen Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Three Doors Down Lord of the Rings March of the Penguins Kicking and Screaming Spongebob Squarepants The Cat in the Hat Liar liar pants on fire Row row row your boat Chicken Little Dora the Explorer Winter Olympics Amazing Race Fear Factor Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!! :) Current Mood: thoughtful | | Saturday, December 24th, 2005 | | 10:47 am |
I am a native of Phoenix, Arizona. I still live here...well, in the suburbs of Phoenix, anyway. As you might imagine, after living here for 38 years, I have deep roots. I have good friends, a few that go back as far as high school. Good friends that are a bit newer than that, as well. My kids go to a wonderful charter school. My parents, whom I adore, live here. Steve's parents live here also, although that is not as much of a plus for me, it is nice to see the healthy (finally!) relationship that has evolved between Steve and his father. I met my husband here. (He is from Colorado). I was married here. My children were born here. This is my home. Now, having said that, let me just say...I HATE HEAT!!! I hate the heat, I hate the sun, and I hate everything hot or even warm. What has brought on this rant, you ask? It's the fact that today, on Christmas Eve, and tomorrow, Christmas today, which to most people evokes images of snow and sleigh rides and hot chocolate and snow and roaring fires, it's going to be 80 FUGGIN DEGREES!! Yes, that will be a record tomorrow, as our previous record high for Christmas day is 78 degrees. 80 degrees. On Christmas. That is just so far beyond wrong that I don't even know how to catagorize it. Our normal high for this time of year is around 65, which I can handle. At least at that temperature, I can wear a pair of jeans and not be hot. 80 degrees. Did I mention that tomorrow is CHRISTMAS???? Let me drift back to a fond memory. It was about two weeks ago. It was a lovely day. It was about 58 degrees, overcast, and a bit windy. A perfect day, as far as I was concerned. I was actually able to wear one of my long-sleeved shirts, and dare I say...a hoodie. A co-worker and I were walking across the parking lot together to the cafe to get a sandwich. I mentioned what a lovely day it was. She looked at me like I was crazy. I told her that I wished every day was like this, and that I wouldn't mind if I never saw the sun again. People think I am nuts when I say that. The truth is, I have been baking in this hellish sun for 38 years, and I am not kidding when I say that it would suit me just fine if every day for the rest of my life was cloudy, cold, and windy. With some rain thrown in. People laugh at me, they say oh, you'd miss the sun if it didn't come out only for a couple of weeks. No. I. Wouldn't. I yearn for weather such as that in the Pacific Northwest. I would move there in a New York minute, if only I could bring everything here which is dear to me, with me. Unfortunately, I don't think all my family, friends, and the kids' schools would be willing to relocate. My kingdom, as it were, for a little rain. Some clouds. A nice breeze. Right now we have been under heavy pollution warnings for weeks. What would it take to rid us of the temperature inversion-induced high pollution days? You guessed it...some rain, and a good strong wind. Doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon. You know, the heat didn't bother me so much when I was a kid. We played outside when it was 110 degrees, and didn't think much of it. I now loathe the summer. I dream of October the way some people dream about winning the lottery, because that is when the daytime temperature will drop under 100 degrees. By November, it's normally downright comfortable. November, December and January, and sometimes February are my favorite months, because the weather is comfortable. Those months are far, far too short. I guess the reason I am so enraged by the weather right now is that 80 degrees is infringing on my few precious comfortable weather months!!! It's Christmas, for fuck's sake!! In case I have not been perfectly clear, let me reiterate: I. HATE. THE. SUN. /rant Current Mood: hot | | Wednesday, September 21st, 2005 | | 10:46 pm |
Capitals, anyone?
This is from a coupon message board that I belong to. This woman's spelling and grammar are always horrible, but her statement here scared the hell out of me. Thank goodess she is childless. She seems to have no concept of when it's appropriate to capitalize, among other problems. "My Sister HomeSchool My Nephew,He turn out very well He is now 25. He had a very good Job And doing fine. If I had Kids I would homeschool them." I went to post this to Grammar Whores, but the mod queue is full, as usual. Current Mood: bored | | Wednesday, September 14th, 2005 | | 7:31 pm |

Much love to Cindy Sheehan. God bless her for what she is trying to do, what she is doing. I was listening to her on the radio on the way to work, on the Ed Schultz show. They played a sound bite from the chimp saying how he personally grieves for every death in Iraq. Yeah. Sure he does. And later on today, monkeys are going to fly out of my butt. I think a lot of people see this country very divided politically. That is true, but I also see it very divided intellectually. Because anyone with the sense that God gave them could not have voted for Bush in 2004. I didn't vote for him in 2000 either, but we didn't have all the information then about his lies and deceit that we do now. So there are people with common sense, reason, and intelligence in this country who totally disagree with the Bush crime family and their administration. Then there are the others, who are basically sheep, believing everything they are told and spouting the party lines. 9/11, Sadaam, WMDs, terrorism, blah blah blah. It's pathetic that there are so many stupid sheep out there who can't think for themselves. The very sad part is, I think there are more of them, than there are of us. Things are changing though, I think...latest poll said only 38% of American's approve of his handling of the war. And that's less than 7 months into his second term. In another year, who knows? Maybe more and more people will start waking up. | | Sunday, November 14th, 2004 | | 8:10 am |

The election...
Where to begin, where to begin... Wednesday, I was a mess. I never thought that GW being re-elected would hit me so hard. I watched Kerry's concession speech, and I cried. Crazy, I know. I was just so hopeful. Hopeful that something good would come out of this election, and that we (the country) could head in a new and different direction. A direction where people realize that going to war is a last resort, not a first resort. A direction in which no one tries to tell me what I can and can't do with my own body. Yes, I know Roe v Wade still stands, but if the Repukelicans have their way... A direction where I am not ashamed to live in this country. A direction where our leaders realize that they are but small cogs governing an entire populace made up of many different people from many different backgrounds, cultures, races, and opinions. And where all the people, not just a select few, are important. I hate W. Every time I see his beady little eyes on tv, I want to throw up. He is so arrogant, so sure that he can do anything he wants. He is also very sure that now that the election is over, we all need to "get behind" him. Well Mr. Bush...bullshit. I don't agree with you, and I don't have to stand behind you. I consider myself a patriot. Consider what Theodore Roosevelt said: "Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President." That's about where I'm at right now. I love this country so much, and right now I hate it's leader. I believe in my heart that he is dangerous, to us and to the world. We need to start working together with other countries in order to move towards global peace. Isolating ourselves from our allies and friends, and those that used to respect us, is NOT a great idea. We need to work with other countries. We need to foster a spirit of peace, harmony and goodwill. But of course, GW doesn't see this, because he is a greedy little moronic bastard who is only intent upon taking care of his friends in the oil industry, and of course, Dick's company, Haliburton. Please click here to view at 100 facts about GW's first term: (God help us, there will probably be at least twice as many with a second term.

My feelings about the outcome of this election are that I am disappointed, and sad. Sad that so many people in this country are so blind. They have blinders on, out there in the bible belt, and they think that he's "a man of faith", so that's all they see. Well, #1, I don't believe him. He can say he's a Christian all he wants, and that he prays blah blah, but I don't believe it. I think it was a tactic to win the presidency. And guess what, it worked. Way to go, sheeple. Here's a guy with those great morals that you are all so fond of. He was arrested for DUI. He snorted coke in college. He deliberately missed an AF physical so he would be ineligible to fly. He pussied out of the draft, and then couldn't even manage to show up to National Guard duty when he was supposed to. He is arrogant without a reason. He has lied to us. How many more reasons did you all need to vote him out?? But with those bible belt blinders on, "he's a man of faith" is all you needed. Well, guess what? Osama bin Laden is a man of faith. He has more faith than you'll ever have. He actually believes that he is on a holy crusade against us, and that he will go to heaven with 55 virgins. He might be a certifiable nutcase, but he really believes all that. So he is a man of tremendous faith. I have a John Kerry for President sticker on my car. I have been told, in this Repukelican state that I live in (where Bush got 55% of the vote, Kerry 45%), that the election is over and I should take the sticker off my car, that we all now need to get behind the president. Well, screw you! I am not taking it off. I voted for him, and I'm proud of it. And when (and it is a question of when, not if) GW screws things up so badly that even the repukelicans go "wow, maybe this wasn't a great idea after all", and the country is going to hell in a handbasket, I want everyone to know that I didn't vote for him, and it's not my fault.
Just a couple more quotes here:
"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly as necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else." - President Theodore Roosevelt, 1912
"It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from the government. - Thomas Paine
I just hope to God that after four more years, there is something salvagable left of our once great country. God bless, and God help America.
